Lucy Morrison, Central Law Training | When a leader gets tired and uncertain, it’s time to lean into communicating with vulnerability and humanity.

Lucy is Managing Director of Central Law Training, a UK legal training firm. Lucy’s a former large firm lawyer who joined Central Law Training 9 years ago and within 3 years, had risen to the top of the company.

She was excited to lead but was crushed to get an employee engagement survey in which her staff told her she just wasn’t communicating enough. They didn’t feel heard.

Lucy listened. She didn’t blame her staff. She dug deep to think about how she could improve. It’s tiring and stressful to run a business while raising kids and learning that your employees aren’t thrilled with the company culture. That’s exactly the time in which most leaders become more distant and aloof.

Lucy did the opposite. She chose to tell her team about her struggles. She showed them her humanity, and they responded. After the next survey results came out, the improvement was stratospheric.

"What are people looking to you for, as a leader? Leaders must be sensitive to their own style while understanding the requirements of the people they are leading.”
